Rare 415-year-old Wytfliet Atlas stolen from the Royal Library of Sweden recovered at NYC gallery

ArtDaily.org reports a story from the Associated Press about the Wytfliet Atlas, a 1597 manuscript by Cornelius van Wytfliet that was stolen from the Royal Library of Sweden by the chief of its manuscripts department.  Anders Burius stole at least 55 books from the Royal Library during his tenure there from 1995 to 2004.  He confessed in 2004 and later committed suicide.

The atlas was being offered for sale by a New York map dealer, who had purchased it from Sotheby's in 2000.  When the truth about the manuscript's provenance was revealed, the dealer turned the book over to the Royal Library.
